There is a part of me that really wants to like this movie. Should I say it is likable but never quite inspires. One is left with an ambivalence afterward. You don't want to say anything bad because it was likable but at the same time there is no real spark. It was an evening of entertainment and diversion but I never quite connected with the characters. I think the producers were hoping to come out with a sequel based on Atlantis but I am not sure this one went over well enough to fund a second one. I was glad we waited until "Dollar Tuesday" at the cheap theater.
I give it an indecisive thumb.
I was not sure what I would think of this movie. Yes, I grew up watching the TV series but that doesn't mean a remake is any good. For example, Steve Martin, as funny as he may be, could not replace Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau. But I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It is silly, dumb fun and it made me laugh. In fact, I haven't laughed that hard for awhile. It will not win any Academy Awards but it will entertain. Be aware there is adult humor but nothing too offensive. I actually liked it better than the TV series.
We saw this last night and enjoyed it. It is good for laughs and a fun time. There is nothing very serious or weighty so don't expect to be intellectually challenged. They did a good job capturing the era of the 1920's.
I give it a thumbs up.
